Argentina is introducing a new Citizenship-By-Investment pathway, which enables qualifying applicants and their families to acquire Argentine citizenship through a significant investment.

The framework is established by Decree 366/2025 and Decree 524/2025. The Agencia de Programas de Ciudadanía por Inversión (APCI) has been established to oversee the programme. The Argentine government announced the proposed investment thresholds and key features on 2 October 2026.

The programme has not yet officially opened. Its launch is anticipated in late 2026 or in the first quarter of 2027, subject to the remaining legislative and administrative arrangements. The information below is preliminary and may be amended.

Proposed Investment Routes

On the basis of the information announced in October 2026, two routes are proposed for the main applicant:

  • Option A, non-refundable contribution: USD 350,000.
  • Option B, government bond: USD 800,000. The preliminary structure is a zero-interest government bond with a proposed holding period of seven years. The principal is expected to be returned at maturity, subject to the final bond terms.

An additional USD 100,000 is proposed for a spouse and for each dependent child aged 18 to 25, and USD 25,000 for each child under 18. Children aged 18 to 25 are expected to be unmarried and without children of their own. Parents are not currently expected to qualify as dependants.

Key Benefits of Argentine Citizenship

  • Global mobility: the Argentine passport provides access to approximately 169 destinations without a traditional advance visa, including the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, Japan and China.
  • South American access: as a MERCOSUR member state, Argentina provides facilitated residence arrangements in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and other countries, subject to regional rules.
  • United States E-2 Treaty Investor Visa: Argentine nationals may apply for an E-2 visa to establish and operate a qualifying business in the United States.
  • Tax residency: under Law 27.802, acquiring citizenship through this pathway does not automatically establish Argentine tax residency.
  • A G20 economy: Argentina offers an established legal system, substantial domestic markets and extensive regional connections.

Application Process

The anticipated process begins with an initial eligibility assessment and the preparation of documents, followed by an independent due diligence report. The Argentine authorities then review the application and may grant preliminary approval. The qualifying investment is completed thereafter.

One visit to Argentina is required for biometric enrolment, naturalisation and passport issuance. Overall processing is expected to take approximately 6 to 9 months. The final rules, procedures and launch date remain to be confirmed.
